Historic Wrap Up To The 2009 Pro Tour

Anyone who has witnessed the Pro Wakeboard Tour for any amount of years would agree that today’s action at Sparks Marina in Reno, Nevada made for one of the best season finale’s in history.

A big-time move was landed for the first time in a contest, a Junior Pro clinched his 5-stop sweep and a rookie won the season title.

What a day. Emotions were running high as the final day of the 2009 MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour got underway. And emotions definitely peaked during the finals, as Rusty Malinoski signaled for a “left” double up at the end of his run.

Driver Travis Moye knew that this could be the day for the first 1080 in competition; especially since Rusty lands 1080s behind his own MasterCraft X Star wake pretty much daily. The crowd was silent as Rusty booted off the meaty double up. After spinning three frontside 360’s, Rusty landed smooth, edging out on his switch toeside edge, making it look easy. The announcers, judges, sponsors and fans all went crazy. The center tower shook with the fever for this monumental moment in wakeboarding history. Rusty took a victory lap around Sparks Marina as his wife and son watched with pride and excitement. The entire site lit up with cheers as Rusty pulled back to shore, a true heroes welcome that he will never forget.

It seems like a 1080 would sum up the action for the day. However, Phillip Soven stood up a flawless finals pass, which scored him the first place finish for the Pro Men division. Bob Soven also claimed first place in the Junior Pro Men’s division. This victory for Bob leaves him with a perfect 2009 season.

As for the Pro Women, Dallas Friday and Nicola Butler went head to head for first place, with Dallas prevailing in the end.

Although the riding has commenced, the day is not yet over. We are headed to the awards ceremony for the MasterCraft Pro Wakeboard Tour here at the Nugget Casino. There is plenty to celebrate tonight and we plan on taking advantage of that. Take a peek at the photo gallery and wish that you were here to witness this epic wrap-up to the 2009 PWT season.

Danny Harf’s wrapped toeside melon backside 180’s have made for some of Rodrigo Donoso’s best photos of the season.

Bob Soven boots a huge stalefish on his way to winning every event on the five-stop Junior Pro Tour.

Dallas Friday made a killer comeback in 2008, winning the Reno event putting her in good shape for a Queen of Wake title.

Collingwood, ON - The final day at Wakestock was highlighted by sunny, hot weather and calm water, although an early morning thunderstorm threatened to put a damper on the day's festivities. Once the storm cleared, the day kicked into high gear as the world's best wakeboarders and wakeskaters took to the water of Collingwood Harbour to battle out the final rounds of the WWA World Series for an overall prize purse of $25,000 and the coveted Wakestock belts.

The action got under way in the Malibu Boats Pro Wakeskate Championships with a six-man semifinal. Leading the way into the final round was past Wakestock wakeskate champs, Stuart Shinn and Brian Grubb. They were also joined by Wakestock rookies Grant Roberts and local Ontario rider Dan Brown. In the end, it was Grubb walking away with the win; his 5th Wakestock title overall.

Up next was the Billabong Pro Wakeboard Championship, which saw a 16-man quarterfinal cut down to an eight-man semifinal. Canadians made a strong showing by filling up half of the field with Rusty Malinoski, Aaron Rathy, Olivier Derome and Raphael Derome all advancing.

The four-man final was comprised of the hottest riders in the world at the moment; Phillip Soven, the WWA World

Series overall points leader, Aaron Rathy, the King of Wake overall points leader, Harley Clifford, the PWT overall points leader and Bob Soven, the Jr. Men's PWT point leader. Buoyed on by the hometown crowd, Aaron Rathy had two flawless passes, which included a Heelside Wrapped Back 7 and a Toeside Backside Off-axis 5 to take home the Wakestock title.

"This is unreal. I'm super stoked to win Wakestock," claims Rathy. "Especially considering how good everyone was riding here. The Wakestock crowd is so big and so close it really makes riding a lot of fun. Rusty [Malinoski] told me that I'm only the third Canadian ever to win along with him and Jeff Heer so it feels good to be in that company."

4th annual CARPARK SLIDER CHALLENGE A HUGE SUCCESS

Great jump Troy. On Saturday at our 4th annual Carpark Slider Challenge Troy Roker jumped a motor cross style gap on his wakeboard over concrete 13.5 meters (44.26 feet) long and was around 5.5 meters (18 feet) high in the air. To pull off the jump he rode over a specifically designed up-ramp and down-ramp built by Liquid Malisha. To get the speed he needed, he used an Urban Rider Winch with a 9hp engine.  Troy practised for 4 days before the event slowly moving back the up-ramp as he felt confident.
Troy said "I was pretty nervous before the first jump, there were a lot of people who had come out to watch and I wanted to go as far as possible for them". "After I got my first jump out of the way I was feeling heaps better and was able to go 13.5 meters on my third jump".
“Before his jump there was a wakeboard rail comp, held out the front carpark of the shop. Matty De Nittis took out the honours followed by Ryan Leary and James Tyrell.  Also a huge thanks needs to go to Trojan Wake Ski Snow for putting on the event and promoting our sport in such a big way. “It was great to see so many people come to see our event this year and we are now looking towards next years event which will be held on the Saturday night before the Sydney Bridge to Bridge Water ski Classic next November.

Many thanks must go to all our sponsors who without this event would not have been possible.

MICHEAL (fish Farm) SEARL WINS TROJAN’S CARPARK SLIDER CHALLENGE

The 3rd Annual Trojan Carpark slider challenge took place over the weekend, and was a massive success for all involved.  With $8000 prize money up for grabs, some big name riders came down for the event, and really turned it on for a huge crowd, showing why they are some of the best rail riders in Australia.

The set up used was all part of Liquid Malisha’s rails and pools. There were 3 pools. with a brand new flat bar, for the guys to get their steez game on,  then through the second pool, and into the infamous LM A frame.

The boys were absolutely ripping it, throwing down some big combos across the 2 rails, pushing each other to the edge.

Josh O'Connell came off second best a couple of times, but this didn't stop the crowd from getting behind him to give it another crack, again and again and again.

Eventually, it would turn out into a battle royal, between 3 heavyweights in Josh O' Connell, Michael Searle (Fish Farm) and Troy Roker.

These 3 guys are very well known in Australia for their skills on the rails, and it really showed in their ability to get the crowd on their feet.

Coming out on top was Fish Farm, who threw down some amazing presses
along the flat bars, and incredible spin combos over the A frame to take home  the $3000 first prize.  His consistency sealing the deal.

In second place was Troy Roker, who walked away with $2000.  He really
showed people how to almost break your ankle when pressing out tailslides, while at the same time, passing the handle through your legs.  His style is unbelievable.

And in third place went to Josh O' Connell, taking home $1000, who really introduced himself on several occasions to the A frame, at times, letting his chest do the sliding instead of his board!  However, his nose slides wowed the crowd throughout the night.

All in all, the night was a massive success with lots of giveaways, beats cranking all night and some quality riding going down.
A BIG thanks to the sponsors, Trojan Wake Ski Snow, Fluid, Wake Magazine, Liquid Force, Zee, Jstar, Dirty Dog and Wing wetsuits.

Yes it will be on again next year, under lights 8pm Saturday 22nd
